A Father’s Gift

The second of three poems I am sharing this week that I wrote a long time ago.

If you missed the first one here it is:  A Mother’s Gift

I also posted another poem on Monday about spending time with your significant other, you can find it here :  If It’s Only An Hour

A Father’s Gift
It’s just you and me now

We will get by somehow

I promise to give you all my love

You’ll always be who I’m thinking of

I know you’re sad, I am too

Oh no baby , I don’t regret you

I know that we lost your mother

So you may never have a sister or a brother

I know no one will ever take her place

Someday, you may be asked to let another be that face

Until then, it will be just you and I

So we must remember, even when we don’t know why

Everything happens for a reason

Good and bad, in every season

We’ll both make mistakes, but nothing you ever do

Could ever, ever , take away my love for you

A Mother’s Gift

I did not know April was National Poetry Month.  I just read that the other day. In honor of that, this week I will share three poems I wrote a long time ago. Twenty one years or so. The only reason I still have them is because they were published. Yes, I paid $30, I think it was, to buy the book and they, in return, published the poems. All three have to do with a dream I had when Kayhla’s mom was pregnant. Here is the first called A Mother’s Gift :

All I have left in this world

Is you, yes you, my little girl

Your mommy left, yes she is gone

No, baby, it wasn’t anything you had done

Her smile would move Heaven and Earth

You know, she passed it to you at your birth

Her eyes sparkled just like yours

When she cried, my eyes  would also pour

She loved life and all its pleasures

She did so much but you’re her greatest treasure

Mommy couldn’t wait til the day you were born

There you were, I was happy, yet I mourned

I see her in everything you do

Sshh now baby, looks like you have her temper too

It’ll be hard, but you and I, we will survive

‘Cause mommy passed away to give you life

If It’s Only An Hour

Many of us always seem to be too busy to spend time with our significant others. I know my wife and I are really bad about making times for ourselves. It is something we always talk about but seldom do. We get up early to work or work out, we go all day and Kylie goes to bed at 9:30 then we are right behind her, getting rest for the next early morning. However, I know there is time if we make it. What about you? Do you make the time? 30 minutes, an hour, if that’s all you have make them count.

If It’s Only An Hour

If it’s only an hour

To help our love flower

Then I will take the time

To keep our love alive

If it’s only sixty minutes

Then I will buy  the tickets

We will dance to each song

We will keep this love strong

If it’s only three thousand six hundred seconds

In each and every one I will be present

We will laugh and talk

We will hold hands as we walk

If it’s only sixty minutes

This my dear, you can believe it

I will  reconnect with you

I will do everything I can do

If it’s only an hour

I will do all that’s in my power

To show you what our love  means to me

To show you, show you  what I see

Until God gives us another hour

I Think This Is Over

I’m glad I am sober

Watching you sleeping

Watching you breathing

I think this is over

Lost in my thoughts

Losing my mind

Can we push rewind?

What have we lost?

Remembering how we met

Your heart beats, am I still there?

Then I realized I didn’t care

It’s time to take the next step

I  remember when I used to laugh

You used to smile

I feel I’m always on trial

Together we don’t make a half

I’ve talked, yelled, I’ve tried

I can’t fix what you’ve become

I can’t undo what has been done

I hurt too, you know I’ve cried

I reach out, touch your shoulder

Watching you sleeping

Watching you breathing

I think this is over, this is over

I try to hold you, love you

You act like I’m an alien

You used to be so radiant

This isn’t going to be easy to do

I’ll stop short of calling you a liar

I don’t know what else to say

I think yesterday was our last day

I’m past the point of being tired

I think I better do this quick

I won’t lose my nerve

Too exhausted to swerve

This is just making me sick

But I am glad I am sober

Watching you sleeping

Watching you breathing

Your heart beats , am I still there?

Then I realized I didn’t care

I think this is over

The Ornament

IMG_0797

I sit in a box all year

Waiting to share the Christmas cheer

When I was shiny and new

I was in the front, had the best view

Now that I am old and scratched

Another year of being in the back

IMG_0799 (1)

Oh how I long to be

Out front so I can see

The family, the presents, the shows

Frosty, Rudolph and all the snow

But here I am in the back again

Ah, the front. I remember when

The first time on the tree

The first time you looked at me

I know you remember too

your smile as you hold me so is true

The light in your eyes as you recollect

The memories of days gone by we accept

Christmas Will Come

Christmas will come

No matter what you’ve done

Whether you believe or not

It doesn’t matter if you forgot

He came to fulfill His obligation

There is no need for negotiation

Many said He wasn’t God, they lied

He was born, He lived, He was crucified

Christmas is about His birth

He came to show us our worth

Born with silver spoon or born in a slum

Have no doubt Christmas will come

It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor,

Find it in your heart or in a store

If you live in America or Tel Aviv

It doesn’t matter what you believe

If you have or haven’t heard of Him

Whether your light is bright or dim

Santa Claus is not the reason

That we celebrate this season

If you can buy ten gifts or none

Have no doubt,  Christmas will come

A long time ago on a cold December morn

A beautiful, wonderful baby boy was born

To save this world of our sin

And that death would not win

Many years after His manger birth

He taught of ways not of this earth

To get to Heaven He is the only way

He forgives the times we sinned today

With the pounding of a drum

Have no doubt, Christmas will come

When we are down, our spirits He will lift

In all our wants we only need one gift

That was given to us free of charge

The cost of His death for me was too large

For me to live, this gift I must accept

I will live for Him, I will never forget

With the softness of a hum

Have no doubt, Christmas will come

Lights, trees, ornaments, presents

Christmas coming did not represent

Love came down, a star shined bright

Darkness was overtaken by His light

It doesn’t matter where you’re from

My dear friends, Christmas will come

Do you believe?

Do you deceive?

Some may try to stop it or delay

But you can’t stop His birthday

No matter how far away you run

Jesus Christ is here, He did come

It doesn’t matter what you’ve done

Have no doubt, Christmas did come
