The Little Drummer Boy

Merry Christmas everyone. Happy Birthday Jesus. My last post before Christmas will be on my favorite Christmas song.

I don’t know why but The Little Drummer Boy has always been my favorite Christmas song. Maybe it is the simplicity of it, one verse then pa rum pum pum pum, then one verse and pa rum pum pum pum etc.  Maybe it’s the meaning of it, which to me is the true meaning of being a Christian.

Jesus was born,  a gift to us. He was born to die. He sacrificed Himself for our sins. Because of His birth, and then His death, we can live forgiven. A gift given knowing that we could not repay it. We can come to him no matter who we are or where we are from. No matter what we look like, dress like, what kind of car we drive or whatever home we live in. Come as you are! A little shepherd boy came with the only gift he had, he could play his drum for him. He played his best for him. Then Jesus smiled at him. Jesus wants us to believe in Him and accept Him into our hearts.

Maybe it is the message from the last scene of the cartoon. Jesus changed his heart of hate to a heart of love. Take the time to watch the last five minutes here :

Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

So to honour Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Five five five five five five what rum
five five five five five five what rum
five five five five five five what rum
five five five ahh

Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give a king, pa rum pum pum
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,

Shall I play for you, what five five five rum,
On my drum?
(five five five-part)

Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
(pum pum pum part)

Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.

Kylie’s Baptism

IMG_0518

I can not express how full of joy my heart is today. Kylie made the decision to give her life to Jesus December 22.

IMG_0822

Here is a little background on Kylie. We have always let her make her own decisions in her own time. She didn’t want to go to her age bible classes. She stayed with us in “adult” worship until she was six. We would always ask her if she wanted to go and she went a few times here and there but always came back to us.  Then one day she went and has never looked back. IMG_0829

IMG_0833

Kylie has always been active but always loved individual sports. She liked running and racing. She liked throwing baseball and football and shooting basketballs but did not want to play team sports. Then she turned seven and said she wanted to play basketball. Then she played soccer. Now she wants to play flag football. She says she wants to be the first female NFL quarterback. Who are we to say no? She will either work and practice hard enough to do it or she will find something else. IMG_0835

IMG_0836

I think because we, as her parents, had ten years in between our middle girls and Kylie, that our perspective on parenting has changed. We give Kylie control of her decisions and we support her win, lose, or draw. If she says she wants to jump off the house, we say do you think that is the smart thing to do? 99% of the time she makes the correct choice but we have given her that responsibility. We have given her self-confidence and a love for herself. We give her enough room to find herself as well as pull her in close so she knows she is loved and knows who God is and what it all means. Yes, she is still a a young girl and drives us nuts sometimes but she makes parenting easy for us.

IMG_0520

Of course, we are not alone in helping her along the way. Our wonderful church and the staff and volunteers and church members at Westerville Christian Church are amazing and talented people. It takes a village to raise a child and we have the village to help us.

IMG_0838

Kylie doesn’t like to miss church. We can go on vacation and she will get upset that she will miss church. I believe God has already used her in our lives. (More on that on a later post). I see how she treats other kids and I can see her compassion and empathy she has for others. I see how she cares about others. She has even volunteered to help out younger children in our church. She always seems to be filled with joy and I see others gravitate to her naturally. She asks questions.

IMG_0521IMG_0839

We have brought up the issue of baptism many times over the years and she always said no, not ready. She wanted to finish her book about baptism and make a decision for herself. When it was her time and she chose to be baptized, she was.  On December 22, she made the most important decision of her life. IMG_0841

IMG_0842

I pray that she will choose to live the life she has chosen to live. I pray that she will always look to the one who loves her unconditionally and who will always accept her.

The Gift

There didn’t seem to be much she didn’t want. It seemed like half the toy catalog was written down on her list. Barbies, doll houses, princess things, and dolls. Not to be left out were matchbox cars, board games, Playmobil things, and a football. She even asked for love. She was just a young girl.

Her list changed over the years. Now there were clothes, gift cards, and money on the list. She also asked for  iPods, iPads, and other things that start with I. One thing hadn’t changed though, she still asked for love. She was just a teenage girl.

She had most everything she ever wanted.  She didn’t have much of a list this year. A new pair of Nikes, some pots and pans for her new apartment, gift cards, and money. Mostly, she just wanted her family to be together. She still was asking for love. She was just a young woman.

She had everything she had asked for. She had been married a few years and had her first child. She asked for her child to be healthy.  She asked for her husband to be faithful. She asked for good friends. She asked to be successful in her career. She asked for her bills to be paid. She asked to always be loved. She was just a young mom.

She was confused about her life. Something was missing. She had everything she wanted. She had a great career, she had great friends. She was happily married, had two healthy, happy children and a strong foundation from her parents, but she had forgotten about the one who loved her.  Somewhere along the way she had forgotten about her faith. She asked for love. She asked for forgiveness. She was just a young Christian woman.

She thanked God for the life she had. She asked that her children have a relationship with Jesus. She asked that they don’t wait as long as she did to accept Jesus in her life. She asked that they realize how much they are loved. She knew the gift that Jesus had given her. He was born, He lived, and He died on the cross for her sins. She asked for love and she received the love of her Heavenly Father. She received a gift she could never pay back. A gift given to her a long time ago. She just had to be open to receiving it. She was just a woman on her journey to eternal life.

She asked for one more day. She asked for memories she couldn’t recall. She shed a tear for a child lost too young. She asked to see her parents again. She remembered Christmas past. She asked if she had done enough. She thanked God for the gift of love He had given her. She was just a woman at the end of her days here on earth. She was just a woman, filled with joy for the life she had lived. She was just a woman that loves God. She was just a woman that accepted His gift.

She was just a woman who asked for love.

I sit in a box all year

Waiting to share the Christmas cheer

When I was shiny and new

I was in the front, had the best view

Now that I am old and scratched

Another year of being in the back

IMG_0799 (1)

Oh how I long to be

Out front so I can see

The family, the presents, the shows

Frosty, Rudolph and all the snow

But here I am in the back again

Ah the front. I remember when

The first time on the tree

The first time you looked at me

I know you remember too

your smile as you hold me so is true

The light in your eyes as you recollect

The memories of days gone by we accept

Christmas Will Come

Christmas will come

No matter what you’ve done

Whether you believe or not

It doesn’t matter if you forgot

He came to fulfill His obligation

There is no need for negotiation

Many said He wasn’t God, they lied

He was born, He lived, He was crucified

Christmas is about His birth

He came to show us our worth

Born with silver spoon or born in a slum

Have no doubt Christmas will come

It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor,

Find it in your heart or in a store

If you live in America or Tel Aviv

It doesn’t matter what you believe

If you have or haven’t heard of Him

Whether your light is bright or dim

Santa Claus is not the reason

That we celebrate this season

If you can buy ten gifts or none

Have no doubt,  Christmas will come

A long time ago on a cold December morn

A beautiful, wonderful baby boy was born

To save this world of our sin

And that death would not win

Many years after His manger birth

He taught of ways not of this earth

To get to Heaven He is the only way

He forgives the times we sinned today

With the pounding of a drum

Have no doubt, Christmas will come

When we are down, our spirits He will lift

In all our wants we only need one gift

That was given to us free of charge

The cost of His death for me was too large

For me to live, this gift I must accept

I will live for Him, I will never forget

With the softness of a hum

Have no doubt, Christmas will come

Lights, trees, ornaments, presents

Christmas coming did not represent

Love came down, a star shined bright

Darkness was overtaken by His light

It doesn’t matter where you’re from

My dear friends, Christmas will come

Do you believe?

Do you deceive?

Some may try to stop it or delay

But you can’t stop His birthday

No matter how far away you run

Jesus Christ is here, He did come

It doesn’t matter what you’ve done

Have no doubt, Christmas did come
